Manilal Mohandas Gandhi was the son of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi. He had three brothers. joined the satyagraha struggle and between 1910 and 1913 he served four prison sentences, two of them for just ten days and the other two for three months each.  in 1917 Manilal returned to South Africa to assist in printing the Indian Opinion a Gujarati-English weekly publication, at Phoenix, Durban.
He married to Sushila Mashruwala in 1917 who became his partner in the printing press, learning composing, and had two daughters, Sita (1928) and Ela (1940), and one son, Arun (1934). Arun and Ela are also social-political activists.
