André René Roussimoff known as André the Giant, was a French professional wrestler and actor. André was a one-time WWF Champion and a one-time WWF World Tag Team Champion.

early life

Andre was born Andre Rene Roussimoff in Grenoble, France on May 19, 1946. His parents, Boris and Marian Roussimoff, and four siblings were of average size. He was a good student, but he dropped out after the 8th grade. Andre, however, suffered from acromegaly, a disease that results in an over abundance of growth hormones. Also known as Giantism, this disease caused Andre's body to continue growing his whole life, and by the time he was 17 he stood 6'7".

wrestling career

In 1966 Roussimoff met to Canadian promoter and wrestler Frank Valois. Valois becoming his business manager and adviser. Roussimoff began making a name for himself wrestling in the UnitedAndré the Giant Kingdom, Germany, Australia etc. he was thought by some to be the strongest man in the world. On March 26, 1973, André debuted in the World Wide Wrestling Federation as a fan favorite and defeating Buddy Wolfe in New York's Madison Square Garden. He was Mentioned in the 1974 Guinness Book of World Records as the highest paid wrestler in history, up to that time. He earned $400,000 in one year alone during the early 1970s. he won WrestleMania (1985) Beat Big John Studd in a bodyslam match and WrestleMania 2 (1986) he Won a WWF/NFL Battle Royal.


He made his acting debut in 1975 as "Big Foot" in a special two part episode of The Six Million Dollar Man. He also had parts in movies André the Giantsuch as Conan the Destroyer, Micki and Maude, and TRADING Mom.


He was died on January 27, 1993, in a Paris when He was in Paris to attend his father's funeral. andre had one daughter, Robin Christensen Roussimoff, who was born in 1979.
