In fairness, he did suffer serious hamstring injuries to his right leg, and finally turned professional in 1973. Beamon was really great, only in 1968, when he also establish a world indoor record of 8.30m and after this his triumph in Mexico he never exceeded 8.20m. Beamon is in the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. His world record was finally broken in 1991 when Mike Powell jumped 8.95 m (29 ft. 4 3/8 in.) at the World Championships in Tokyo.
